Competent Adult

< 1 min read

Definition

  • A competent adult is one who:
    1. Has reached the age of maturity; old enough to legally consent,
    2. Is of sound mind; not suffering from mental illness, and
    3. Is not subject to coercion, fraud, or duress.
  • Because the exact definition of each of these is subjective, and the answer depends on where you draw the line on a continuum, local communities should define a reasonable interpretation for each.
